Course Information

Due to the resounding success in 2024, we are delighted to offer Walk, Draw, Connect again in 2025. The primary focus of this course is to draw and sketch in situ: responding to the stunning area of coast and hills that surround Ullapool. A series of daily walks will allow you to discover this remote and beautiful area in slow mode. Each day, handmade sketchbooks will be used to gather information and to record a personal response to the environment you find yourself in. Through mark making, drawing and writing, you will develop a direct connection to place. Individual responses will progress and build on what has been learnt before. There will be an emphasis on taking the time to ‘just be’ in the landscape. Slide talks and demonstrations will introduce students to ways of recording, ’seeing’ and experiencing the landscape that may be new to them. Students will develop a wealth of reference material and resource drawings that they can then use to develop works further in the studio or at home. On the final day students will either be based in the studio, to allow time to consolidate their work made during the previous days outings or walking independently in the local vicinity. This course is suitable for beginners and those more experienced. However, an ability to walk, unassisted, on hill paths, forest tracks and river banks, is the main requirement of the course. We will be going out walking each day, with each walk getting progressively longer, (the longest walk @ 8k and the highest point @200 ft above sea level). We will take a packed lunch on 3 days, with a studio lunch on Monday and Friday. You will have to carry all you need for the day in a rucksack, so this is probably one of the most important pieces of equipment along with walking poles/sticks that you will need to bring along. Please contact us if you have any queries regarding agility and fitness.
