To celebrate Bridge House Art's tenth year on the Island of Tanera Mor as a creative venue for residential courses, we aim to bring an exciting change to the nature and content of the course. The course this year would suit students and artists that are happy to work independently each day from a set brief that will be given out each morning as a source of inspiration and a loose guideline to follow, aiding a focus and theme to the week as a whole.
Each evening a slide talk before dinner will act as a stimulus for ideas and discussion, and will encourage each student to work through their own ideas and methods inspired by the set brief. Eleanor White, the course leader, will take part in the practical work alongside each member exploring as a group together, rather than offering any formal tuition. The emphasis will be placed on the group's interpretation of the theme ISLAND LIFE. Each morning will begin by meeting together and reading through a brief for the day, gathering materials and then working alone till lunch, setting off again in the afternoon and rejoining as a group for a feedback session on the days work over a well-earned cup of tea!
Each day will build on the previous day's work and will accumulate in a little show and tell on the Friday evening, as a celebration of the creative practice of a week that has been inspired by life on the island of Tanera Mor. Students that have previously been on the courses to Tanera are warmly welcomed as well as newcomers, the only difference this time will be the ability to work independently. As the only inhabited island in the Summer Isle group, Tanera will give the participants the opportunity to engage with a creative working environment, both on the rugged shoreline and in the interior of the island. On a clear day from vantage points, you can see the hills of Skye, the Outer Hebrides and the far north of Sutherland. The studio, which is also a café and post office, offers space to eat meals, create and share the day's activities. No cars, no television, no roads, only the elements, the history and the beauty of the island acting as inspiration.
Lizzie and Richard Wilder are our hosts for the week and will make you comfortable in the three stone houses and cabins. Tanera Mor is only 15 minutes from the mainland by passenger boat. As always, all art materials will be supplied, so that you can travel light.
What will be offered:
All accommodation and meals - please bring your own alcohol if you wish.
All basic art equipment - a toolbox will be given with all the necessary materials for drawing and painting. If you are a maker, please bring materials that you wish to use to supplement the basic tool kit.
A selection of large and small drawing boards is provided.
Inspirational ideas in the form of a set brief each day will be given by Eleanor White, followed by a full day of drawing, painting, making and creating, until 5pm when the group will gather to show and discuss their discoveries. A slide talk will be given each evening to stimulate discussion and creativity.
